Last month while sitting with my father and mother having breakfast a thought came to mind. My father smoked for 51 years up to the point he just had to have a big heart surgery. When we use to get into discussions about life, health or spirituality before his surgery, he repeated the same opinion for as long as I can remember. “Life is for eating, sleeping and having sex.” “I am enjoying my life and one day I will be gone.” I am not affecting anyone by the way I eat, drink or smoke, I am only affecting my own life.”
Now about 6 weeks ago I had to drop everything, all my clients, work and schedule to come and look after him. He had to have his aorta replaced, a pacemaker put in and is now going to take 6 months to recover.
Sitting on the bed looking at him all broken and in pain I was thinking of his mantra. He is a man loved and respected by every person who meets him, but is that doing any good while he is in pain? Should we be thinking of all our actions towards our self and how they will affect others? When we drink a coke, eat greasy fried foods or drink alcohol should we be thinking about how this will affect others when they will have to look after us if we become unwell? My mother has virtually stopped doing anything for herself and is now living his life everyday.
I also just heard that another friend of mind went into hospital for 6 days as she has intestinal issues. They will operate tomorrow. She is very dear to me and we have been friends for so long. When I stay with her she is always laughing at the things I eat or drink as she starts off the day with tea (stimulant) then 4 to 8 cups of iced tea. This is terrible for her condition.
After an accident many years ago she has many internal complications and could never have children. She finally decided to have a baby by a surrogate mother and now has a wonderful child. What is amazing to me is that she does not give much attention to her health (eating, drinking, thinking) as now she is responsible for another living being. Her health has never been very good or a priority so why would she risk affecting someone else? The fact that we are not healthy is why we make unhealthy choices- as light attracts light.
I have made many selfish choices in my lifetime so I can relate.
In yoga philosophy every action or even a thought has a reaction of some degree towards us and therefore towards all other living beings. We are in control of our speech, actions and our mind. Every little move we make which is negative or positive will at some point affect our life and the lives of others. We are connected and should keep that in mind when making choices.

thank you for the inspiration to cope with my nightly wine habit, Cameron. i have known for along time it is stunting my growth as a human/spiritual being and that, even though, i don’t do anything outrageous when i drink (it’s my end of the day stress reliever) it still has a ripple effect on those close to me. what a blessing to find the link to your blog on myspace first thing this morning. thanks again & wish me luck. xoxo

When we make choices, we don’t necessarily think about the impact that these may have on our environment. Modern psychology encourages us to look after ourselves when we forgot about ourselves for so long by taking care of others.
Because we don’t see the difference between taking care of ourselves and being selfish, then comes the time where we make selfish choices. A fleeting impression of being free! “I did it for myself!” But finally, as Victor Hugo (French writer of the nineteenth century) wrote, “Freedom consists in choosing between two slavery: selfishness and conscience. Whoever chooses consciousness is a free man. ”
Make choices for ourselves without excluding from the picture those we hold dear, is the proof that we are part of a whole. The one who only lives for himself makes sense if he chooses an acetic life away from human beings. If we decide to live in the midst of others and those we love, it is our duty to act in a responsible way always by paying attention not to hurt those we hold dear and by measuring consequences for our actions.
Then we can say that taking care of ourselves is thinking about others!
P.S.: I hope my thoughts make sense in my non-native language

This a good post and I can totally relate to this, especially since I literally just got in from the ER room with my own dad! But however selfish people’s actions sometimes ‘appear’ to be, I think it’s important to be aware not to judge another, as I don’t believe the majority of people consciously choose to become physically ill.
I think that often, a physically sick person, was already sick in some other aspect of their being anyway (e.g emotional, mental, spiritual etc) - the cause of this underlying probably being a collective one, stemming from either an environmental, or social act of disturbance… of which we all share joint responsibility.
Also, if we are all connected, we must show care, compassion, love and forgiveness for all parts of ourselves, (including other people, the land and animals, which are just an extension of our own consciousness)… just like we would care for a wound on our own body.
Sadly though, many people don’t even care for themselves let alone see the divine in All else, as they simply do not yet recognise this divinity inside their own Self.
Still, everyone has made unwise choices in life, and no one is perfect - therefore no one person can truely place blame another. After all, we have all been there… and we have all had to learn through our own mistakes. Therefore its best to remain forgiving and loving and not to fall into the trap of feeling resentful towards someone who has shown their body neglect and for which everyone eventually has to pay.
It’s perhaps also important to remember that sometimes, we can be given our greatest lessons when we are put in the position of having to look after someone or something else. It can be a humbling, grounding experience, one that presents us with the opportunity to express and live out many of the highest Divine qualities of unconditional love, service, compassion and understanding.
In fact, the ’sick’ person who we may at first perceive as a burden or limitation on our life (as judged by the limited view of the human ego), may actually be giving us the opportunity to redeem our own Self (and I believe, possibly balance past life karma) through self sacrifice and service to another.

Yogi Cameron -” hi ”.Speaking about things sometimes is important to gain clarity.Six weeks ago!In six weeks how much has happened?Yogi Cameron - how much has happened for you in these six weeks?Have you become clear about anything? What is it exactly that is affecting you because it’s on your mind?Your father is a seperate individual,a seperate being of his own inspite of him being your father in this lifetime. That he is respected and looked up to is his merit and he should be the one to know in what way/s he wants people to respect him and look up to him.It should not be for you to decide whether he is of use to others now or not anylonger. You can support him and encourage and empower him on his journey with your love and higher knowledge. You can’t walk his steps for him!Or think for him!Encourage, empower, support and love one another is all we can do for each other. He came to earth in this life to accomplish what he alone knows he came for.Besides why did you take rebirth in your mother’s womb and chose to have him as your father in this lifetime?Even that is one huge reason for him to have taken rebirth now.And so has every other being who takes rebirth.Yogi Cameron - when we gain higher knowledge (knowledge from a higher source, empowerment),our DNA changes. It does not matter any longer what parents we are born to.We don’t look any different all of a sudden,so we look like a normal human being to anyone else, but the DNA which changes makes a powerful, tremendous change in oneself and very soon one begins to realize it and see and notice the changes. These things others can’t see.It is only through our behaviour and lifestyle that things are visible to others. And for anyone not knowing about these things will not understand it.When one gains higher knowledge from a higher source,i don’t know sweet Yogi Cameron if you have made this experience, one realizes it when the thoughts, ideas and words just stream in and flow into one’s mind at any time and most of all one knows it because those thoughts that flow into one’s mind are like DNA information. They are not usual thoughts and are not written anywhere but give one such a deep insight and understanding and it is like they are such basic secrets that one just knows it is from a higher source the higher knowledge. It stuns one in that moment but one feels such a deep calm and confidence at the same time which is a fabulous feeling.
That is why when such happens, one’s outlook changes rapidly and one sees other beings with a different light especailly one’s family ties in one’s lifetime. And a huge truth is all of us beings on the earth now are born in the time of the Mayan Prophecy which will fulfill in 2012.This means that many of us are born with a different consciousness or are also made to evolve this way as we are assisting the earth during this major energy shift. It involves the planets and the stars and the elements.
Yogi Cameron - shifting the focus from personal view on your father, such as father - son,to a view of two different people, seperate individuals who share their lives with each other but each came to earth with their own personal journey - should help. When in pain and caught up in the quicksand of pain and misery,it takes special energy to get oneself out of the quicksand. You know how to increase that special energy.Do it.And the truth about pain is that no master became a master without learning about pain and mastering it.Pain is an intimate thing. It is one of the most intimate feelings one has.
About the kind of choices we make - if you still want to think you have made the ’selfish’ kind of choices then you may think that way for as long as you wish to and you will also keep on feeling that way.But a little word of advice : If you had made any different choices at any time, you would have made different experiences in a different way but you would not have ever escaped the life lessons you had to learn on this journey to become who you are.You came to earth in this life to learn specific lessons and those same lessons you would learn by making any kind of choice. All of us lead different lives on this planet,in different corners of the world, but millions and billions of us learn ditto the same life lessons in making different experiences in our lives based on the choices we make.We have different routes and paths of our life journeys, but we are taught the same lessons.
quoting you here Yogi Cameron :
” The fact that we are not healthy is why we make unhealthy choices- as light attracts light. ”
~ Yes,it is our minds where it begins.Where everything germinates. What do we grow in our minds? And YES light attracts light.
quoting you here :
” In yoga philosophy every action or even a thought has a reaction of some degree towards us and therefore towards all other living beings. We are in control of our speech, actions and our mind. Every little move we make which is negative or positive will at some point affect our life and the lives of others. We are connected and should keep that in mind when making choices. ”
Yes Yogi Cameron,i agree to what you say.Thank you for this precious reminder and lesson. All my love to you.
Yogi Cameron, remember i am a real person and not something in the astral world, just something existing somewhere.Keep me in your mind.Think of me Yogi Cameron.I am sure you know what I mean.
Care for yourself with special care then the earth needs you and healthy beings.I don’t know if i am gonna do any sports today but i have some errand to run after which i will do some yoga, stretching and meditation.

Cri Cri each of us know the right and correct path but at times we talk ourselves into an easier moment, which turns out making our path even more long and difficult down the road. Invest in the future.
Namaste to all. You all put a lot of effort and thought into your writings.

It is something, the way we treat ourselves and each other. On one hand, who doesn’t want to be giving? But then, on the other hand, we get caught up in suspicions and the like.
“We are connected and should keep that in mind when making choices.”
Ultimately, this is noble, to me, to attain in one’s own living experience.
