Many people ask me about working out in the gym to know if I think it is beneficial. Well, why do people go to the gym in the first place? Is it not to get a ‘great’ body? This seems to be the first motivation and any intention to just get outer beauty to fit the times, will not be beneficial. You have to look back into how this pastime became popular as man’s quest for outer beauty became excessive.

Other issues are;
1-The gym is an artificial environment of air conditioning, lights and machines devoid of much that is natural. These are very negative conditions to be putting the body under pressure to physically perform. People are usually also listening to music and watching TV which is also making the senses overload.
2-The machines are artificially pushing (taking the place of self motivation) a person to push them self beyond their natural capacity, making you over sweat, dehydrate and over work the whole system of muscles and organs. This helps organs to become older quicker so they will not function naturally.
3-Lifting weights also shortens muscles and takes away flexibility which is not beneficial to health. A flexible body will lengthen muscles and help the flow of blood around the body.
4-The hot/cold aspect of the body and mind become imbalanced as the system tends to over heat.
5-Maybe the most important point is that the breath becomes very shallow and rapid, letting in much less air for the system to be able to function naturally. Especially with a competitive mind, the person will make their breathing very imbalanced which will affect the heart, lungs and brain.
It is interesting as many people also go to the gym to ‘let off’ excess energy (anxiety and stress) accumulated through frustrations of work, relationships or sexual tensions. These frustrations need mental attention and this ‘quick fix’ burst of energy seems to do the job for a moment but you might find it is more of a distraction from the real issues.
It is better and more positive to help the body to reach its peak health instead of reaching fitness for outer appearances. If you take a view to be healthy rather than fit then you will feel mentally and physical well and arrive at the weight you need to be naturally.

I’m one of those who got sucked into a gym membership….eventhough I’d laugh at how everyone at the gym looks like hamsters on their exercise wheel. The artificialness was the first thing I noticed about the gym environment….but during the winter it really is the only place to get some exercise in my day. Mostly I go to the gym for the classes—they are boring because they only satisfy the external, not the internal. But to get some physical exercise even if it’s the gym is still better than not exercising and it’s nice to meet new people at the gym. To me fitness is important because I can feel the difference in my bodily function, and my mood. At the same time I hold a yoga membership, and yeh that’s far more satisfying…but unfortunately I found this yoga studio is lacking the spiritual guidence. So I’m on the search for a studio that will guide me on the real yoga practice……that is the spiritual practice that I’m seeking.
Cameron, thx for being so bold, even if it’s going against the grain. I’m so glad that my gut feelings about the gym are validated by your article.

Alex-It all depends on what kind of lifestyle you have and how much energy you burn up. As I write in the article once a day eating is good for people who are not exerting themselves very much. At your age you may want to eat twice a day until you feel once a day is adequate.
