Homosexual practices were admitted in ancient Greece. They were considered as a rite of initiation. At the beginning of Roman Empire, they were tolerated in a context of bisexuality. Did Nero not married his castrated slave Sporus? Philosopher Cicero was the first to criticize and condemn homosexuality in Roman Empire followed gradually by religious leaders and politicians.
In one of the most famous passages of the Feast (Platon), the philosopher Aristophane evokes his thesis of halves. Before the Gods decide to cut them in two parts in a fit of anger, the human beings were double. There were double men-men, woman-woman and man-woman. Thus, the destiny of each human being is to spend his life in seek of his missing half whatever the sex is. Interesting, isn’t it?
“There were no abnormal when homosexuality was the norm” (Marcel Proust/Sodome et Gomorrhe).
Nice podcast… I would say that people compartmentalise things because they need to give definition and meaning to something. A whale is not a whale until it was named as such…. India did not exist (as a place) until we named it so. Giving things definition is a fundamental part of what makes us human.
However, the naming of a gay gene threatens gay people because it suggests that there is a potentially (in the future) a cure. But I believe there is no such thing (as a gay gene)… there may be a tendancy to be more open minded, adventurous, even childlike but ultimately everyone is bisexual… and I don’t even like that term! But when you think that the term, or idea, of homosexuality didn’t exist pre Victorian times and that many great figures: Shakespeare, Alexander the Great, Caeser, Leonardo Da Vince etc had sexual relations with other men, and it was no big deal… then it really doesn’t seem like a big deal does it.
